Astronomers For Planet Earth

Astronomers have detected thousands of planets orbiting other stars. We study the attributes that make a planet habitable and we search for life on other worlds. However, potentially habitable worlds are more than 25,000,000,000,000 miles away. We can learn much from our discoveries of remote planets but, as noted by 2019 Nobel Laureate, Michel Mayor, we cannot travel to them. We must take care of Earth. Astronomers for Planet Earth is a grass-roots movement uniting astronomy students, educators, and scientists around the globe to share their astronomical perspective about the Earth and climate change with the public. San Francisco has always been foremost among all cities anywhere in recognizing and advancing the cause of labor rights and economic justice. And that is why, San Francisco is the only city anywhere in the world to dedicate a major pier on its historic waterfront to honor a labor leader, Jim Herman former President of the ILWU. To highlight this honor, ILWU Shipclerks Local 34, commissioned an extraordinary work of original art to be permanently located at Pier 27. This is the story of James R. Herman and the memorial that honors him.
 

Tides of Change

James R. Herman was one of my father’s best friends and mentors, as well as the closest thing to a grandfather I ever had. So when the city of San Francisco decided to name the new Pier 27 Cruise Terminal after him, it was a great opportunity for my father and I to collaborate to tell his story.

Finless Foods is a company working to help solve our planet’s overfishing problem by growing fish meat in a lab. In the +4 minute brand video below, I not only helped film and edit the video together, but I also provided the animated sequence. In the 1 minute comedic video, I not only wrote and edited the video, I co-starred in it. After working as a farmworker for years from Arizona to Washington, Arnulfo Solaria approached the Napa Valley Grape Grower's Association on a mission to educate his fellow farmworkers. They responded with support and with help from the community created the Farmworker Foundation, which strives to enrich the Napa community by providing educational initiatives free of charge - including English language programs, vocational programs, and internships.
